Can I clean damp wall mold myself or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind our sofa in our Jumeirah apartment has started to feel damp and has these weird black speckles. We’ve lived here for two years and just noticed it, probably because we finally moved the furniture to clean. I’m handy, but my wife thinks we need a professional. Is this something I can safely investigate and clean myself, or should I call a mold inspection company?

Black speckles on a damp wall in Jumeirah are a strong indicator of mould growth, commonly triggered by Dubai's high humidity and condensation from AC units. Whether you can handle it yourself depends entirely on the extent.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub with a solution of diluted detergent or a dedicated mould cleaner, then dry the area completely. The critical step is fixing the moisture source. This is often condensation from an AC unit blowing cold air directly onto the wall or a hidden plumbing leak.

Given the wall feels damp and you just discovered it after two years, a professional inspection is strongly advised. The dampness suggests an ongoing water issue that needs identification. In Dubai villas and apartments, common culprits are leaking condensation drain lines from the AC, seepage from external walls during rare rains, or internal plumbing leaks within the wall cavity. An inspection uses moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the exact source without destructive probing.

Attempting a DIY fix on a larger, damp issue often spreads spores and misses the root cause, leading to rapid regrowth. A reputable inspector will provide a detailed report on the mould type (via lab analysis if needed) and the precise moisture origin, which is required for any effective remediation. This documented cause is also essential for building management or landlords to address structural repairs.
