Can I clean JLT AC mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Lakes Towers has been leaking a little, and now I've spotted a patch of black mold on the wall behind the bedroom curtain. It’s been there for maybe two weeks and seems to be slowly getting bigger. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I need to call a professional mold remediation company here in Dubai?

That depends on the extent of the leak and the mold growth. A small, surface-level patch you just noticed might be manageable. However, given the constant high humidity in Dubai and the fact it's behind a curtain (a potential condensation point), the moisture source is likely still active.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can attempt to clean it with a dedicated mold-cleaning solution, not bleach. Bleach only removes surface discoloration and does not kill the roots on porous surfaces like drywall. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Scrub the area thoroughly and allow it to dry completely. The critical step is fixing the AC leak; otherwise, the mold will return quickly.

Given the location in JLT, a high-rise building where leaks can affect internal walls, and the growth pattern you describe, a professional assessment is strongly advised. They can identify the full extent of the moisture intrusion, often with a thermal camera, and ensure the AC drain line or unit is properly repaired. Remediation companies follow protocols to contain the area, preventing spores from spreading to other parts of your apartment during cleaning. For any growth larger than a few square feet, or if you smell a persistent musty odor, professional remediation is the recommended course of action to ensure it is resolved safely and effectively.
