Can I clean large black mold myself or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. It's a pretty big patch, maybe two feet wide, and the wall feels damp. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from all the humidity lately. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach, or do I absolutely need to call a professional company?

For a patch that size with underlying dampness, professional remediation is strongly advised. In Dubai's climate, visible mold often indicates a deeper moisture issue within the wall, possibly from a slow pipe leak or persistent condensation from your AC. Simply wiping the surface will not solve the problem, and it will return.

While small surface mold can sometimes be handled with proper precautions, a two-foot patch suggests significant growth. Disturbing it yourself risks spreading a high concentration of spores throughout your home, potentially worsening your children's respiratory symptoms. Bleach is not recommended; it is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and can release harmful fumes, especially in poorly ventilated spaces.

The priority is identifying and fixing the moisture source. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to locate the origin of the dampness behind the wardrobe. Remediation involves isolating the area, safely removing the contaminated section of drywall, and applying professional-grade antimicrobial solutions.

Given the health symptoms and scale, an inspection is warranted. The process should conclude with post-remediation verification, often involving air or surface sampling, to confirm the spore count has returned to a safe level. This is the most reliable way to ensure the environment is healthy for your family.
