Can I clean large black mold patch myself or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. It's a pretty big patch, maybe two feet wide, and we've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it after moving the furniture. I'm worried about their health but also don't want to call maintenance if it's something I can clean myself with bleach.
Is this a DIY job or do I absolutely need to get professional help for something this size?

For a patch that size and with health symptoms present, professional assessment is strongly recommended. The visible mould is often just the surface issue; the main colony feeding on moisture is likely deeper within the wall or behind it.
In Dubai's climate, this is almost certainly due to a hidden moisture source. It could be a small plumbing leak from an adjacent bathroom, condensation from an AC supply line running inside the wall, or humidity from poor ventilation. Simply cleaning the surface with bleach will not address this root cause, and the mould will return quickly. Bleach also fails on porous surfaces like drywall or concrete, as it cannot penetrate to kill the roots. Given your children's coughing, identifying the species is critical. "Black mould" is often Stachybotrys, which produces mycotoxins and requires careful containment during removal to prevent spreading spores throughout your home. However, many dark-coloured moulds are less hazardous but still major irritants. A professional inspection includes moisture mapping to find the water source and air/surface sampling to identify the species and spore count in your living areas. This data is essential to understand the health risk and plan a proper remediation, which for a two-foot patch, will likely involve cutting out and replacing the affected wall section under containment. DIY cleaning is only for very small, surface-level patches (under one square foot) caused by obvious, already-fixed condensation. For this scenario, the priority is identifying the hidden moisture problem and getting a lab analysis to understand what your family has been exposed to. |
