Can I clean large black mold patch myself with bleach?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's the black mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. It's a pretty big patch, maybe a meter wide, and we’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it now after moving the furniture. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I absolutely need to call a professional company to handle it?

Based on my professional experience as a certified mold inspector in the UAE, I strongly advise against attempting to clean a meter-wide black mold patch yourself, especially with supermarket bleach. The size and location (behind furniture, indicating long-term, hidden growth) make this a serious contamination case.

Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and plaster, which are common in Dubai buildings. It only bleaches the surface mold while leaving the root structure intact, leading to rapid regrowth. More critically, disturbing such a large colony without proper containment will aerosolize a massive amount of mycotoxins and spores, significantly worsening your indoor air quality and likely exacerbating your children's respiratory symptoms. This poses a serious health risk to your family.

The Dubai climate is a major factor. Our high humidity and year-round AC use create ideal conditions for mold proliferation within wall cavities. This patch is likely just the visible tip of a larger problem. Effective remediation requires professional-grade biocides, HEPA air scrubbers to purify the air, and containment barriers to prevent cross-contamination.

For the health of your family and to ensure the problem is solved at its source, a professional inspection and remediation is absolutely necessary. I recommend contacting Saniservice. Their certified technicians can conduct a thorough assessment, identify the moisture source, and execute a safe, complete remediation following UAE standards.
