Can I clean large mold patch myself or need professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has had this damp, earthy smell ever since the weather got really humid about a month ago. I finally pulled the wardrobe away from the wall yesterday and found a patch of black and green fuzzy mold, about the size of a dinner plate, behind it. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed this, and I'm worried it's been there a while. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold remediation company?

Given Dubai's high humidity and your villa's location in Jumeirah, a dinner-plate-sized patch indicates a persistent moisture issue, likely from condensation or a slow leak. For a patch that large and established, a DIY approach is often insufficient and can be risky.
While supermarket bleach can remove surface discoloration, it doesn't kill the mold roots (hyphae) penetrating porous materials like drywall or plaster. It also fails to address the underlying moisture source, so regrowth is highly probable within weeks. More critically, improper cleaning can aerosolize spores, spreading them to other parts of the room and exacerbating potential health risks, especially if anyone has allergies or respiratory sensitivities. A professional inspection is strongly recommended here. They will identify and rectify the moisture source—often poor ventilation, thermal bridging causing condensation, or a hidden leak—which is the only way to prevent recurrence. For remediation, they use containment barriers and HEPA filtration to prevent cross-contamination and apply specialized antimicrobial agents that penetrate deeper than bleach. The Dubai Municipality has guidelines for proper mold remediation to ensure it's done safely and effectively. You can manage very small patches (under one square foot) yourself with caution, but for this size and duration, a science-driven approach with a moisture audit is the most reliable solution for your family's indoor health. |
