Can I clean mold behind my wardrobe myself?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from all the humidity this past month. I'm worried it's making us sick. Is this something I can clean myself with vinegar or bleach, or do I need to call one of those professional mold removal companies in Dubai?

Based on the symptoms you've described and the location of the growth, this is a situation that warrants significant caution. The persistent coughing in children is a strong indicator that the mold colony has become established and is releasing mycotoxins and spores into your indoor air. The area behind a wardrobe is a classic problem spot in Dubai due to the constant use of AC, which creates significant temperature differentials between the cooled room and the warmer wall, leading to condensation and trapped moisture—a perfect breeding ground for mold.

While a small, surface-level patch might be addressed with a dilute bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water), what you describe is likely more serious. The key issue is that DIY cleaning with vinegar or bleach only addresses the visible discoloration, not the root cause: the moisture. Furthermore, these methods do not kill the mold roots (hyphae) embedded within porous materials like drywall or plaster, leading to rapid regrowth. More critically, aggressive scrubbing can aerosolize a massive amount of spores, drastically increasing your family's exposure and potentially contaminating other areas of your home.

For the health of your family and to ensure the problem is resolved permanently, a professional inspection is non-negotiable. We use thermal imaging cameras to identify the exact moisture source and extent of the infestation, followed by air quality testing to determine spore count and species. Remediation involves containment, HEPA filtration, and specialized antimicrobial agents, not bleach.

Given the health symptoms and the hidden nature of the growth, I strongly recommend you call a professional. For a certified inspection and remediation protocol in line with Dubai Municipality guidelines, contact Saniservice at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or hello@saniservice.com.
