Can I clean mold behind wardrobe myself or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual and I’m worried it’s from the black spots I just found behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah Park. It’s been so humid lately and I think it might have gotten worse after we ran the AC less while we were on vacation last week. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold inspection company to check the walls properly?

That black spot behind the wardrobe is a classic sign of condensation mould, especially in Jumeirah Park's current humidity. When the AC is off, warm, humid air settles on cooler wall surfaces, creating the perfect damp environment for growth.

For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can attempt to clean it yourself. However, do not use bleach. It is mostly water, which feeds the mould root structure, and the chlorine fumes are hazardous in an enclosed space. Instead, use a dedicated mould cleaner or a solution of distilled white vinegar and water. Scrub the area thoroughly, let it dry completely, and consider applying a mould-inhibiting primer before repainting.

Given the location and that your children are experiencing respiratory symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly advised. The visible spot is likely just the surface manifestation; the mould may have penetrated the gypsum board or insulation behind it. A proper inspection uses moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the exact moisture source and assess the full extent of the damage within the wall cavity, which is impossible to do visually. In Dubai's climate, simply cleaning the surface without addressing the hidden moisture problem guarantees it will return. A certified inspector can provide a lab analysis to identify the species, which is crucial information if health concerns are present.
