Can I clean mold behind wardrobe myself with bleach?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from the humidity this past month. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I need to call in a professional mold removal company?

Depends on the extent and type of mold. For a small patch (under one square foot) of surface mold you just discovered, a DIY approach can be sufficient. However, the location behind the wardrobe is a major concern, as it indicates a persistent humidity problem, likely from condensation against a cold exterior wall or a hidden leak.

Bleach is not recommended for porous surfaces like drywall or plaster. It only removes surface discoloration but does not kill the root structure (hyphae) inside the material, and the moisture from the bleach can actually feed future growth. For a small area, use a dedicated fungicidal cleaner or a solution of distilled white vinegar and water, scrubbing gently.

In Dubai's climate, the high humidity is the root cause. Simply cleaning the spot without addressing the moisture will guarantee its return. You must identify why moisture accumulated there—often it's condensation from an AC duct in the wall, a small plumbing leak, or inadequate insulation. Moving the wardrobe away from the wall to improve airflow is crucial.

Given the symptoms your children are experiencing, a professional inspection is strongly advised. Coughing can be a reaction to both live and dead mold spores disturbed during cleaning. A certified inspector can identify the species (some, like Stachybotrys, require professional remediation) and use moisture meters to find the exact moisture source hidden within the wall cavity, which is critical for a permanent solution.
