Can I clean mold behind wardrobe or need professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be from the black spots I just found behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom. We've lived here in Jumeirah for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from all the humidity lately. Is this something I can clean with bleach myself, or do I need to call a professional mold inspection company to check the walls?

It depends on the extent and cause. For a small, isolated patch (less than 1 square meter) caused by surface condensation, you can clean it yourself. However, if it's widespread, has a strong musty odour, or keeps returning, professional inspection is strongly advised.

In Dubai's climate, the high humidity and constant AC use create perfect conditions for mould. The visible spots behind the wardrobe are likely just the surface manifestation; the real problem could be moisture trapped within the wall itself from a slow leak or poor insulation, which DIY cleaning won't fix.

Using bleach is not recommended. It can discolour surfaces and its high water content can actually feed the mould roots deep in porous materials like drywall. A more effective DIY solution is a mixture of white vinegar and water or a dedicated mould-cleaning product, applied with scrubbing.

Given that your children are experiencing respiratory symptoms like coughing, the situation warrants more caution. Certain mould species can exacerbate these issues. A professional inspection would identify the moisture source, assess the extent of growth (including inside the wall cavity), and identify the mould type through lab analysis to determine potential health risks. They can then provide a verified remediation plan to ensure it is resolved safely and doesn't return.
