Can I clean mold behind wardrobe with bleach?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from all the humidity lately. Is this something I can clean with bleach myself, or do I need to call one of those mold remediation companies in Dubai?

Cleaning small areas of mold with a bleach solution is a common DIY approach, but its effectiveness is limited. Bleach only removes the visible discoloration on non-porous surfaces; it does not kill the mold roots deep within porous materials like drywall or wood, which is likely what your wardrobe is against. In Dubai's high humidity, it will almost certainly return without addressing the underlying moisture source.

The bigger concern is the location. Mold behind furniture, especially a large wardrobe, suggests a persistent hidden moisture issue, likely from condensation against an exterior wall cooled by your AC. This is a very common problem here. Disturbing it during cleaning can release a large number of spores into your bedroom air, potentially worsening your children's respiratory symptoms.

For a suspected hidden problem of this size, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can identify the exact moisture source—whether it's a condensation cold bridge, a minor plumbing leak, or humidity from the AC drain line—and assess the full extent behind the wall. Proper remediation involves containing the area, removing affected porous materials, and using specialized antimicrobials, followed by verification that the space is truly clean and dry.

For your family's health, especially with children experiencing coughing, the priority is identifying the species and ensuring it is properly removed, not just surface-cleaned. A company with its own microbiology lab can provide the necessary testing to confirm the mold type and verify the cleanup was successful, which is crucial for peace of mind.
