Can I clean mold from AC vent myself or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle seems to be blowing out a damp, earthy smell, and I just noticed a patch of black spots around the vent in the master bedroom. It's been super humid the last few weeks and I'm worried it's spreading. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or vinegar, or do I need to call one of those professional mold remediation companies here?

That damp, earthy smell combined with visible black spots strongly suggests active mold growth, a common issue here due to our high humidity and constant AC use. For a small, isolated patch on a vent cover, a DIY approach can be attempted. Turn off the AC unit at the circuit breaker first. Remove the vent cover and clean it with a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water, scrubbing thoroughly. Vinegar is more effective than bleach on porous surfaces and kills many common mold types.

However, the smell indicates the issue is likely deeper within the ductwork or the AC unit's evaporator coil, which you cannot safely access or effectively clean yourself. In Dubai's climate, the interior of AC systems creates a perfect environment for condensation and mold. If the smell persists or you see growth inside the ducts, professional assessment is necessary. They use specialized tools to inspect the entire system and HEPA vacuums to contain spores during cleaning. For a thorough, lasting solution—especially with health concerns or if the area is larger than a small patch—a professional remediation company with the proper certifications and ability to provide before-and-after lab testing is the recommended course of action.
