Can I clean mold from AC vent myself or need professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our Jumeirah Village Triangle villa has been blowing out a weird, damp odor for the last couple of weeks, and now I’m seeing these small black speckles around the air vent in the master bedroom. We’ve lived here for two years and never had this issue until after that unexpected heavy rain last month. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold inspection company?

The black speckles and damp odor strongly suggest mold growth inside your AC system, which is common in Dubai's climate after heavy rain increases humidity. While you can clean the visible mold on the vent cover yourself, it's a temporary fix.

For surface cleaning, use a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water, not bleach. Bleach evaporates quickly and is ineffective on porous surfaces; it can also damage metal components and release harmful fumes. Scrub the vent cover gently, let it dry completely, and reinstall it.

However, this only addresses the symptom. The mold colony is almost certainly inside the ductwork or on the cooling coils, which you cannot safely or effectively reach. Disturbing it without proper containment can spread spores throughout your home.

Given the issue started after a weather event and is now producing an odor, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use borescopes to see inside the unit and ducts and can take air and surface samples for lab analysis to identify the mold species. This is critical, as some types common in AC systems here, like Aspergillus, can pose health risks. The inspection will pinpoint the moisture source—often condensation drain blockages or insulation issues—and provide a remediation plan to solve the problem at its root.
