Can I clean mold from AC vents myself or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been making this weird damp smell for the last couple of months, and now I’m seeing small black spots starting to form around the air vent in the living room. I’m pretty handy, but I’m worried about it being inside the ducts. Is this something I can safely clean myself with bleach, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold inspection company here in Dubai?

Visible mold on the vent cover is often surface-level and can be cleaned. For a small area, a solution of diluted white vinegar or a dedicated mold cleaner applied carefully can be effective; bleach is not recommended as it can irritate airways and doesn't prevent regrowth.
The damp smell indicates moisture is accumulating deeper within the system, likely in the drip pan or evaporator coils. In Dubai's high humidity, AC units run constantly, creating a perfect environment for mold to thrive inside the ductwork where you cannot see or reach it. Cleaning the visible spots yourself may address the symptom, but the underlying colony will remain. A professional inspection is strongly advised because they use borescopes to visually confirm growth inside ducts and can take surface or air samples for lab analysis to identify the species. This is critical, as some types common in damp AC systems can cause significant respiratory irritation. The process is the only way to verify the full extent of the problem and ensure the remediation plan targets the source, not just the visible signs. |
