Can I clean mold from AC vents myself?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be blowing out a weird, damp smell, and I just found patches of black and green fuzzy stuff around the vent in my master bedroom. It's been like this for a couple of weeks and I'm worried it's making us cough. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or do I need to call a professional company to deal with it?

Visible mold around vents often indicates a deeper contamination within the AC unit or ductwork. The high humidity and constant condensation in Dubai's AC systems create an ideal environment for mold to thrive out of sight.

For a small, isolated patch on a vent cover, you can clean it yourself. Turn the AC off, wear an N95 mask and gloves, and use a damp cloth with detergent or a diluted vinegar solution. Bleach is not recommended for porous surfaces as it doesn't prevent regrowth and can irritate airways.

However, if the smell is pervasive and you're experiencing coughing, the problem is likely systemic. DIY cleaning only addresses surface-level mold, leaving the root cause untreated. The spores will return quickly.

In this case, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They can use borescopes to assess the internal evaporator coils and ductwork for widespread growth. Remediation involves containing the area, using HEPA vacuums, and applying EPA-registered antimicrobials. For verification, post-remediation testing by an independent lab is the only way to confirm the environment is safe. This is a common issue in UAE homes, and professional remediation is often necessary for a long-term solution.
