Can I clean mold from carpet myself or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be leaking a bit of water onto the carpet in the master bedroom. I wiped it up but now there's a dark, damp patch about the size of a dinner plate and a weird smell is starting to develop. I'm worried it's mold growing underneath. Is this something I can tackle myself with vinegar or bleach, or do I need to call a professional cleaning company to handle it?

With an AC leak dampening carpet in Dubai's climate, you're right to be concerned. The high humidity here allows mold to establish beneath the surface within 24-48 hours, often before visible growth appears. The smell is a strong indicator that microbial activity is already happening below.

For a patch that size and given the moisture source is your AC, DIY cleaning is not recommended. Surface treatments like vinegar or bleach only address what you can see and may set the stain. More critically, they cannot reach the mold growing deep within the carpet fibers and, most importantly, the underlying padding, which acts like a sponge. In our climate, the padding will remain damp and simply regrow mold, spreading the problem.

Your first step is to stop the source. Have an HVAC technician repair the AC condensate leak immediately to prevent further saturation.

For the carpet itself, professional assessment is prudent. The carpet may need to be lifted to inspect and treat the subfloor, which is a common requirement for proper remediation in such cases. Look for a provider that uses moisture meters and thermal imaging to verify the full extent of the dampness and can provide documented before-and-after testing to confirm the space has been returned to a normal fungal ecology. This is the only way to be sure the problem is resolved and not just hidden.
