Can I clean mold from my AC leak with bleach?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom has been leaking a bit and now I'm seeing small black spots along the bottom of the wall behind the wardrobe. It's been humid lately and the smell is starting to get that damp, earthy feel. Is this something I can clean with bleach myself, or do I need to call a professional for a proper mold inspection?

Cleaning visible mold with a diluted bleach solution is a common first step, but it may not be sufficient for your situation. The black spots on the wall are just the surface growth; the main concern is the hidden moisture and mold within the wall cavity behind the wardrobe, which you cannot access or treat yourself.

In Dubai's climate, where high humidity and constant AC use create perfect conditions for mold, a surface clean often fails. The AC leak has likely saturated the drywall and insulation, creating a larger colony inside. Bleach only removes surface discoloration on non-porous materials; it cannot penetrate porous drywall to kill the root structure, and the dampness will cause it to return quickly.

A professional inspection is recommended here to assess the full extent. They use moisture meters and borescopes to see inside walls without destructive tearing. This determines if the drywall can be dried or must be replaced. For health reasons, identifying the mold type through lab analysis is also wise, as some species common in AC systems can cause more significant irritation.

The priority is stopping the AC leak completely and addressing the hidden moisture. Simply cleaning the visible spots is a temporary fix for a problem that will almost certainly recur.
