Can I clean mold from my AC vent or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC vent in our master bedroom in Jumeirah Park has been blowing out a damp, earthy smell for a couple of months now, and I just spotted a patch of dark, fuzzy stuff around the edges. With the humidity lately, it’s gotten worse. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or vinegar, or do I need to call one of those professional mold remediation companies here?

That dark, fuzzy patch is almost certainly mold, a common issue here due to our high humidity and constant AC use. The damp, earthy smell confirms active microbial growth inside the system, which is blowing spores into your bedroom.

For a small, visible patch only on the vent cover, you can clean it yourself. Remove the vent cover, scrub it outside with a solution of detergent and warm water, then disinfect with white vinegar (which is more effective than bleach on porous surfaces). Allow it to dry completely before reinstalling.

However, the vent cover is just the visible part. The smell indicates the growth is inside the ductwork or on the cooling coils themselves, which you cannot access or properly clean yourself. In Dubai's climate, the interior of an AC system provides the perfect dark, damp environment for mold to thrive year-round.

Disturbing it with DIY methods can aerosolize a high concentration of spores. For any recurring smell or suspected internal growth, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use specialized tools to inspect the entire air handling unit and ductwork. Reputable companies will provide before-and-after lab reports to verify the type of mold and confirm it has been measurably reduced to safe levels, which is the only way to truly resolve the problem and protect your indoor air quality.
