Can I clean mold in AC duct myself?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my apartment seems to be blowing out a weird, damp smell that’s strongest in our master bedroom. I just pulled the vent cover off and the inside of the duct is covered in black and grey fuzzy spots. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed this now after the recent humidity. Is this something I can clean myself with a spray from the store, or do I need to call a professional company to handle it?

Cleaning visible mold in your AC duct yourself is not recommended and often ineffective for several reasons specific to Dubai's climate. The fuzzy black and grey spots indicate active growth, which has likely spread beyond what you can see. Store-bought sprays only address surface mold and cannot reach the deeper contamination within the ductwork or the AC unit's evaporator coil, where moisture constantly accumulates from condensation.
The recent humidity has triggered this growth because mold spores are always present in the air; they simply need moisture to proliferate. DIY cleaning can aggravate the problem by dispersing a high concentration of spores throughout your apartment, potentially affecting your indoor air quality and health. For a case like yours with visible growth and a musty odor, a professional assessment is necessary. A proper remediation involves containing the area, using HEPA filtration to capture spores during cleaning, and applying EPA-approved antimicrobial treatments. More critically, the root cause—often excess moisture in the system—must be identified and resolved to prevent immediate regrowth. In Dubai, where AC systems run year-round, this is a common issue. Companies with their own microbiology labs can provide the most definitive solution by taking samples to identify the mold species and verify the cleanup's effectiveness with post-remediation testing. This science-driven approach ensures the problem is solved, not just temporarily hidden. |
