Can I clean mold myself or call a pro for baby's health?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived in our villa in Al Barsha for two years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind our daughter’s wardrobe. With all the humidity lately, it’s gotten worse, and my youngest has been having a runny nose and a cough that won’t go away. I'm really worried it's the mold making her sick. Is it safe for me to try and clean this myself with bleach, or do we absolutely need to call a professional company to handle it?

It depends on the extent. For a small, surface-level patch (less than 1 square meter), a DIY approach may be sufficient. However, given its location behind furniture and the associated health symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly advised to assess the underlying cause and full extent.

In Dubai’s climate, indoor mold is often a symptom of excess moisture, frequently from condensation on cold walls hidden behind furniture or from a minor, undetected leak. Simply wiping the visible spot with a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) may not address the moisture source, leading to rapid regrowth. More importantly, disturbing mold without proper containment can aerosolize spores, potentially worsening your child’s respiratory irritation.

For your daughter's health and to ensure it's properly resolved, a professional assessment is the safest course. They can identify the specific mold type and moisture source, which is critical. Remediation involves isolating the area, using HEPA filtration to capture spores, and applying specialized antimicrobials, not just bleach. After removal, fixing the root cause—like improving ventilation or addressing condensation—is essential to prevent its return. Companies with their own microbiology labs can provide tangible before-and-after air quality data to confirm the environment is safe.
