Can I clean mold off curtains myself or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the mold growing on the back of our bedroom curtains. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from the humidity. It's a black, speckled patch about the size of a dinner plate. Is this something I can clean myself with vinegar or do I need to call a professional company?

That black speckled mold on your curtains is very common here due to our high humidity and the condensation that can form on cold walls behind curtains, especially with year-round AC use. For a patch that size, you can attempt a DIY cleaning if no one has respiratory sensitivities.

First, take the curtains down outdoors to prevent spreading spores inside. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. A vinegar solution (1 part white vinegar to 1 part water) can be effective for many common surface molds. Spray thoroughly, let it sit for an hour, then scrub gently with a soft brush and rinse completely with water. Sun-drying is ideal, as UV light helps kill remaining spores.

However, given your children's coughing, DIY is not advisable. The mold you see is likely just the visible part; the roots can penetrate the fabric, and spores may have released into the room air. Cleaning the surface often doesn't address the health risk or the underlying moisture problem causing it.

In this case, a professional inspection is recommended. They can identify the specific mold type, assess the spore count in your bedroom air, and find the source of the moisture—often condensation from poor insulation or AC airflow issues. For health-related cases, especially with children, a proper assessment and lab verification that the environment is safe after cleaning is the most reliable path.
