Can I clean mold under my AC myself?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our master bedroom has been leaking a little onto the carpet for a while, and now I’ve pulled back the corner and found a bunch of black and greenish mold spreading underneath. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I need to call one of those professional mold remediation companies?

It depends on the extent and type of mold, but your situation with a long-term leak and visible growth under carpet padding is a high-risk case for DIY cleaning in the UAE. The combination of Dubai's high humidity and the porous nature of carpet and its underlay means what you see on the surface is often a small fraction of the total growth. Bleach is ineffective on porous materials as it only bleaches the surface color without killing the root structure (mycelium) deep within.

For a small, surface-level patch on a non-porous tile floor, a DIY approach might suffice. However, your scenario involves two major complications: the AC unit itself is likely contaminated and requires internal cleaning to stop the source, and the carpet underlay acts like a mold reservoir. Disturbing it without proper containment can aerosolize spores throughout your bedroom and home, potentially causing respiratory issues and spreading the problem.

Professional remediation is strongly advised here. They will address the AC leak source, contain the area to prevent cross-contamination, and remove the affected carpet and underlay entirely, as these materials are nearly impossible to fully sanitize. They can also conduct air quality testing to verify the spore count has returned to a safe level after cleanup, which is a critical step you cannot verify yourself. In many cases, the initial inspection and testing to identify the mold species and full scope is a worthwhile first step to determine the necessary level of response.
