Can I clean moldy AC ducts myself or hire a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be making my eyes water and giving me a stuffy nose every time it runs. I pulled the vent cover off in my bedroom and can see black specks dotting the inside of the duct, and the smell is really earthy. I've been dealing with this for a couple of months now, since the humidity really started to climb. Is this something I can clean myself with a spray from Ace Hardware, or do I absolutely need to call a professional company to deal with it?

Based on the symptoms you're describing—watery eyes, stuffy nose, and an earthy smell—those are classic indicators of a microbial issue, likely mold, within your AC system. The black specks you see are a major red flag.

Here in the UAE, our high humidity creates a perfect breeding ground for mold inside AC units and ducts, especially if there's any condensation buildup. While a retail spray might seem like a quick fix, it's almost always insufficient and can be dangerous. Spraying a biocide into your ductwork without proper containment can aerosolize the spores, spreading contamination throughout your entire apartment and potentially making your symptoms much worse.

For a situation like this, a professional inspection is absolutely critical. We use specialized tools like borescopes to inspect deep inside the ducts and air quality tests to identify the spore types and concentration levels. This is important for health reasons and also aligns with Dubai Municipality's standards for indoor air quality in residential buildings. DIY cleaning often just disturbs the mold without eliminating the root moisture problem, so it comes right back.

For a proper remediation, we use containment barriers, HEPA vacuums, and antimicrobial coatings specifically designed for HVAC systems to ensure it's done safely and effectively.

Given you've been experiencing this for months, I strongly recommend getting it professionally assessed. You can call our experts at 800-MOLDS or 800-66537 for a consultation, or email hello@saniservice.com.
