Can I clean moldy AC myself or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be the AC unit in our Jumeirah apartment. I pulled the filter out yesterday and the inside of the unit looks dark and fuzzy, and the whole living area has a damp smell. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach spray or do I absolutely need to call a professional for a proper mold inspection?

Based on your description of a dark, fuzzy growth and a persistent damp smell, you are likely dealing with a significant mold colony inside the AC unit. In Dubai's climate, where AC systems run year-round and combat high humidity, condensation inside the units creates a perfect environment for mold to thrive.
A surface clean with bleach spray is not recommended. Bleach cannot effectively penetrate porous materials like the insulation and cooling coils inside the unit, and its fumes can be harmful when circulated by the AC. More critically, disturbing a large colony without proper containment can aerosolize a high concentration of spores, potentially worsening your children's respiratory symptoms. For a situation involving visible growth, a persistent musty odor, and occupants experiencing coughing, a professional inspection is strongly advised. A proper assessment involves more than a visual check; it includes air and surface sampling to be analyzed by a microbiology lab. This identifies the specific mold species present and determines if the spore count inside your apartment is elevated compared to the outdoor air, which is the definitive evidence needed to connect it to health symptoms. The remediation process itself requires specialized equipment like HEPA vacuums and antimicrobial treatments to safely remove the biomass and prevent rapid regrowth. Given the health of your family is involved, verifying the environment is safe through documented testing is the most prudent course of action. |
