Can I clean moldy AC myself or need professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom in Jumeirah has been making us cough at night, and I just pulled the filter out to find it completely black with what looks like mold. With this humidity, I'm worried it's spread inside the unit itself. Is this something I can clean myself with a spray from Ace Hardware, or do I need to call a professional mold inspection company to test it?

Cleaning a visibly moldy AC filter yourself is not recommended. The black substance indicates a significant mold colony, which likely extends into the evaporator coils and drain pan inside the unit. DIY sprays from a hardware store are surface-level solutions that won't address the root problem and can aerosolize spores, making the cough worse.

In Dubai's high humidity, AC units are prime locations for mold growth due to constant condensation. A contaminated unit will continue recirculating spores throughout the room. For a situation involving health symptoms like a persistent night-time cough, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They use specialized tools like borescopes to inspect the internal ductwork and coils that you cannot see. The most critical step is identifying the mold species through lab analysis of a swab sample, as this determines the actual health risk and required remediation protocol.

You can start by turning off the unit to prevent further spore dispersal. While waiting for assessment, ensure the room is well-ventilated. For a definitive answer on contamination levels and the correct, safe removal method, a certified mold assessment is the most reliable path.
