Can I clean moldy AC vents myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our villa in Jumeirah seems to be blowing out a damp, earthy smell that’s making my allergies go crazy. It’s been like this since the humidity really spiked a couple of weeks ago, and I can see a bit of black speckling around one of the air vent covers when I look closely. Is this something I can clean myself with a bleach solution, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold inspection company to check the ducts?

You can attempt a surface cleaning of the visible vent cover, but that likely won't resolve the damp smell, which indicates a deeper issue. The black speckling on the vent is the visible spore source, but the main colony feeding it is probably inside the ductwork or on the cooling coils, which you cannot access safely without professional tools.

For a villa in Jumeirah, the combination of high humidity and year-round AC use creates constant condensation inside the system, an ideal environment for mold. A bleach solution is not recommended for AC systems; it can corrode metal components, its fumes are hazardous to circulate, and it only bleaches mold without killing the roots.

A professional inspection is advised because the problem is systemic. They use borescopes to visually confirm growth deep within ducts and on the evaporator coil—the most common source of a damp smell. In Dubai, companies with their own microbiology lab can then take air and surface samples to identify the mold species, which determines the appropriate remediation protocol and any specific health risks. This diagnostic step is critical; what works for common Cladosporium may not work for more persistent types.

Cleaning the vent yourself might offer temporary relief for allergies, but without addressing the hidden source, the smell and spores will return quickly. For a recurring issue exacerbated by the climate, a full system assessment is the most effective long-term solution.
