Can I clean moldy clothes myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom closet has been leaking a little for the past month, but when I pulled out my winter clothes in Discovery Gardens today, I found a bunch of them covered in black spots. With this humidity, how urgent is it that I get this professionally cleaned, or can I handle it myself with bleach?

In the UAE's high humidity, mold on clothes from an AC leak requires immediate action. You can attempt to clean non-delicate, washable fabrics yourself if the mold growth is light and superficial. For heavy contamination, valuable items, or delicate fabrics (wool, silk, suede), professional textile restoration is strongly advised to prevent permanent damage and ensure the spores are properly eradicated.

Start by isolating the affected garments in a sealed bag to prevent cross-contamination. Do not simply wash them, as this can set the stains. For a DIY attempt on cotton or polyester, brush off the dry spores outdoors, then pre-soak in a solution of white vinegar or a specialized mold-killing laundry additive—avoid bleach as it can damage fibers and may not kill the root structure. Follow with a hot wash cycle if the fabric allows.

However, DIY cleaning addresses the symptom, not the cause. The urgent issue is the ongoing AC leak creating a persistent moisture source. In Dubai's climate, this will lead to continuous mold regrowth and can quickly compromise the closet's structure and indoor air quality. The leak must be repaired by an HVAC technician. Afterwards, the closet itself will likely require professional assessment and hygienization to remove hidden mold in walls or insulation, a service that should include post-cleaning verification to ensure the environment is truly dry and contaminant-free.
