Can I clean moldy leather jackets myself or need pros?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet in Mirdif always feels damp, and I just pulled out a few winter jackets to find black fuzzy spots all over the leather ones. This must have been building up over the humid summer. Is this something I can clean myself with vinegar or a specific spray, or do I need to call in one of those mold remediation companies?

Cleaning moldy leather yourself in Dubai's climate is possible if the growth is minor and surface-level. For light, fuzzy spots, mix one part white vinegar with one part water. Dampen a soft cloth with the solution, wring it out thoroughly, and gently wipe the mold away. Never soak the leather. After cleaning, let the jacket dry completely away from direct sunlight, which can damage the material, and use a leather conditioner to restore moisture.

However, for extensive black spots or if the mold has penetrated the leather's grain, professional cleaning is strongly advised. DIY methods can set the stain or damage the material permanently. The dampness in your Mirdif closet indicates a persistent humidity issue, likely from condensation or a lack of ventilation, which is common in rooms with year-round AC use. If the mold returns after cleaning, the underlying moisture problem hasn't been solved.

For situations like this, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the closet's moisture source—whether it's high ambient humidity, a nearby leak, or inadequate airflow. Remediation companies, particularly those with their own microbiology labs, can test to identify the mold species, which informs the safest, most effective treatment protocol for valuable items and ensures the root cause is addressed to prevent recurrence.
