Can I clean my AC mold myself in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been making this damp, earthy smell every time it kicks on for the past couple of weeks. I finally pulled the filter out and the area around the unit inside is covered in black and greenish spots. I’m handy, but I’ve heard mold here can be a serious problem because of the humidity. Is this something I can safely clean myself with bleach and a mask, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold inspection company here in Dubai?

In Dubai's climate, the high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for mold growth inside units. A small amount of surface mold on an easily removable filter might be manageable, but visible growth inside the unit and a persistent damp smell indicate a more serious issue.
Cleaning it yourself with bleach is not recommended. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces, can damage AC components, and its fumes are hazardous in enclosed spaces. More critically, you risk dispersing a high concentration of spores throughout your apartment during cleaning, which can worsen air quality and spread the contamination. The black and greenish spots you see could be several species, some of which are more problematic than others. Without a lab analysis, you cannot know the actual risk level. In the UAE, professional remediation follows specific protocols to contain the area, use HEPA filtration to capture spores, and apply EPA-approved biocides. For a systemic issue within the AC unit itself, a professional inspection is strongly advised to assess the full extent of the contamination within the ductwork and evaporator coils. They can provide a verified, post-remediation assessment to ensure the problem is resolved. |
