Can I clean my AC mold myself or need professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom closet has been leaking for a while and now I’ve found a patch of black and green mold on the back wall and some clothes. It’s been a humid few weeks and the smell is really musty. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I need to call a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

Based on the situation you've described, this is not a case for a DIY bleach solution. The persistent AC leak, the visible growth on structural materials (the wall), and the contamination of porous items (clothes) indicate a significant moisture issue that requires professional assessment and remediation.

In Dubai's high-humidity climate, AC units are a primary source of condensation and potential mold growth if not maintained. Bleach is a superficial fix; it may remove the visible discoloration on non-porous surfaces but will not address the root cause—the water intrusion—or effectively kill the mold hyphae (roots) embedded within the drywall. The musty smell is a clear indicator that microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) are present, which bleach cannot eliminate.

Furthermore, disturbing the mold during cleaning can aerosolize spores, potentially spreading the contamination to other areas of your home and posing an inhalation risk. UAE regulations and best practices, such as those outlined by the Dubai Municipality, strongly recommend professional remediation for any mold affecting building structures to ensure it is handled safely and effectively, preventing recurrence.

For a situation involving an AC leak, structural damage, and a musty odor, a professional inspection is mandatory. Our certified technicians at Saniservice use moisture meters, thermal imaging, and specialized HEPA filtration equipment to contain the area, remove the contaminated materials safely, and rectify the source of the moisture. We then perform a thorough hygienization to eliminate the odor and spores.
