Can I clean my AC's mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect the AC is the culprit. I just pulled off the cover in my master bedroom here in Jumeirah and the mold on the chiller unit is honestly disgusting, like a fuzzy black blanket. It's been getting worse since the humidity really kicked in a few weeks ago. Is this something I can safely clean myself with bleach and a brush, or do I absolutely need to call a professional for this?

Based on what you've described, that is a serious contamination issue and absolutely requires professional remediation. The thick, fuzzy black growth indicates a deeply established colony, likely within the internal cooling coils and drain pan, which you cannot access or properly treat with a surface wipe.

Using bleach is highly discouraged. It is largely ineffective on porous surfaces, its fumes are hazardous in an enclosed AC system, and the high water content can actually feed remaining mold spores after the bleach evaporates. In Dubai's extreme humidity, this will regrow rapidly.

For a chiller unit of this severity, a comprehensive professional process is mandated. This involves isolating the area with negative air pressure, using EPA-approved biocides specifically designed for HVAC systems to kill the mold at its roots, and employing HEPA vacuuming and abrasive cleaning to remove all spores and mycotoxins. A final application of an antimicrobial coating is crucial to prevent rapid regrowth in our climate.

Given the health symptoms you're seeing, this is a priority. DIY attempts will aerosolize millions of spores, spreading the contamination throughout your home and potentially worsening your family's respiratory issues.

We strongly recommend you stop using the unit and call for a professional inspection and remediation. Our certified team can assess it and provide a full hygienization service.
