Can I clean my kids' bedroom mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from this patch of black mold that’s grown in the corner of their bedroom closet since the humidity spiked a few weeks ago. I can’t tell if it’s just on the surface of the wall or if it’s gotten deeper. Is this something I can safely clean myself with bleach or vinegar, or do I absolutely need to call a professional company here in Dubai to handle it?

Based on your description, this situation requires professional assessment. The presence of visible mold coupled with your children's respiratory symptoms elevates this from a simple cleaning task to a potential health and indoor air quality issue. In Dubai's climate, where high humidity and year-round AC use create ideal conditions for mold growth, surface cleaning is often insufficient.

The critical factor is determining the extent of the contamination. If the mold has penetrated porous materials like drywall or insulation behind the surface—a common occurrence when humidity is the cause—then DIY cleaning with bleach or vinegar will only remove the visible discoloration, not the root colony. Bleach can also exacerbate the problem by adding moisture and its fumes are hazardous. Disturbing a deep colony without proper containment and air filtration can aerosolize spores throughout the bedroom, potentially worsening your children's exposure.

For any suspected mold issue, especially with health symptoms present, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. Certified inspectors use moisture meters, thermal imaging, and air quality testing to determine the moisture source and the full extent of the contamination. This is crucial for developing an effective remediation plan that complies with UAE standards for healthy indoor environments.
