Can I clean my moldy AC filter with vinegar?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been making us all a bit stuffy, and I just pulled the filter out to find it covered in black and green fuzzy spots. It’s been like this for a while, probably since the humidity started rising a few weeks ago. Is this something I can clean myself with a vinegar solution, or do I need to call one of those professional mold remediation companies here?

No, vinegar cleaning is not recommended for moldy AC filters in Dubai's climate. The visible fuzz indicates active growth, and vinegar only kills surface mold without addressing the deeper spores embedded in the filter material. In high humidity, it will likely regrow quickly.
For a lightly soiled filter, replacement is the safest and most effective solution. However, visible mold on the filter often means it has spread into the cooling coils and drain pan inside the unit, which you cannot access or properly clean yourself. The persistent humidity and constant AC use here create a perfect environment for this. Given the symptoms you describe, a professional inspection is advised. They can assess the entire system for internal contamination. Reputable providers use lab analysis to identify the mold species, which is critical as some types common in HVAC systems here can cause more significant irritation. Proper remediation involves specialized antimicrobial treatments for the entire unit to prevent rapid regrowth. |
