Can I clean my moldy AC or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom in Jumeirah seems to be blowing out a faint, damp smell that's gotten worse over the last couple of weeks, and we've both been waking up with stuffy noses. I wiped down the visible vents but it didn't help, and I'm worried it's mold inside the unit or the ducts. Is this something I can investigate and clean myself with the right spray, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold inspector for this?

The damp smell and persistent stuffy noses strongly suggest microbial growth, which is common in Dubai's climate due to high humidity and constant AC use. Wiping the vents won't solve it, as the issue is likely inside the unit or ductwork where condensation accumulates.

A DIY approach with a generic spray is not recommended. It only addresses surface mold you can see, not the colony feeding on dust and moisture deep within the system. Ineffective cleaning can agitate spores, spreading them further.

You need a professional inspection. A certified inspector will use tools like borescopes to visually confirm growth inside the evaporator coils and ducts, which is the core of the problem. For a definitive answer on the type of mold and its potential health impact, they should take an air or surface sample for lab analysis. This is crucial for determining the correct remediation strategy.

Given the symptoms and the AC's central role in your bedroom's air quality, a professional assessment is the safest course. They can identify if the issue is just a dirty unit needing a deep clean or a more serious contamination requiring remediation.
