Can I clean shower grout mold w/ bleach or need pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing in the grout between the tiles in our master bathroom. It's the bathroom we use the shower in every day, and the ventilation isn't great. Is this something I can tackle with a bleach spray from the supermarket, or do I need to call a professional cleaning company?

Bleach is a temporary solution for surface mold on non-porous tiles, but it's often ineffective on porous grout where the mold roots penetrate deeply. The chlorine in bleach can't reach the root system, causing the mold to return within weeks, especially in Dubai's humid climate.

For a small, surface-level patch, you can try a dedicated grout cleaner or a paste of baking soda and vinegar. Scrub thoroughly and ensure the area dries completely. The real key is fixing the moisture source. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after showering and consider a dehumidifier. In many Dubai bathrooms, the ventilation simply isn't powerful enough to handle the steam from daily showers.

If the mold covers a large area (generally more than one square meter), has a musty odor, or returns quickly after cleaning, it indicates a deeper issue. This is when a professional assessment is warranted. They can identify if moisture is trapped behind the tiles and perform diagnostic tests to determine the species, as some types common in humid climates can be more persistent. Proper remediation involves specialized antimicrobial agents and addressing the underlying humidity problem to prevent recurrence.
