Can I clean shower mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah apartment for 2 years and just noticed these black spots spreading in the grout between the shower tiles. It's been incredibly humid lately and the exhaust fan in there has never been that strong. Is this something I can tackle myself with a cleaner from Ace Hardware, or should I call a professional cleaning company to deal with it?

Based on the conditions you've described in your Jumeirah apartment, you are likely dealing with a classic case of bathroom mold fueled by Dubai's high humidity and inadequate ventilation. The black spots in the grout are typically Cladosporium or Aspergillus, which thrive in the constant moisture from showers and year-round AC use causing condensation.
For a very small, superficial area (less than 10 square feet), a thorough DIY approach may be attempted. Use a dedicated EPA-approved fungicidal cleaner, not just bleach, as bleach only removes the surface color and does not kill the root structure. Scrub the grout lines vigorously and ensure the area dries completely. The most critical step is to immediately address the moisture source. This means having your exhaust fan repaired or upgraded to one with adequate CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute) output for your bathroom's size, and running it for at least 30 minutes after every shower. However, given that the growth is "spreading," it suggests a persistent issue. Mold roots (hyphae) can penetrate deep into porous grout and even behind tiles. DIY cleaning often only provides a temporary cosmetic fix, and the mold will return without addressing the hidden moisture and root system. For a lasting solution and to ensure the health of your household, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. Our certified technicians use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the extent of the problem behind the walls, which is common here. We follow strict Dubai Municipality guidelines for assessment and remediation to ensure the problem is resolved safely and completely.
