Can I clean shower mold myself or need a pro in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah apartment for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black and greenish spots spreading in the grout between the tiles right by the shower. The bathroom doesn't have a window and the smell is getting really strong, especially after hot showers. Is this something I can tackle myself with a local store-bought cleaner, or do I need to call in a professional cleaning service here in Dubai?

Small surface mold on bathroom grout can often be handled yourself. For a small area, use a dedicated grout mold remover or a paste of baking soda and vinegar; scrub thoroughly and ensure the area dries completely afterward.

However, the lack of ventilation and persistent musty smell in your Jumeirah apartment suggest a deeper moisture issue. Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use create a cycle of condensation that allows mold to thrive behind tiles and in walls. If the mold covers more than a square meter, keeps returning quickly after cleaning, or the musty odor is strong, a professional inspection is warranted. They can identify the moisture source—often a leaking pipe or failed grout sealant—and perform remediation to prevent regrowth, which store-bought cleaners cannot address. For severe cases, a lab test can identify the species to confirm the health risk.
