Can I clean shower mold myself or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the grout in our master bathroom shower. It's been incredibly humid lately in our Jumeirah apartment and the ventilation isn't great. Is this something I can safely clean myself with bleach, or do I need to call a professional company to deal with it?

Based on the conditions you've described in your Jumeirah apartment—poor ventilation, high humidity, and persistent black spots on grout—this is a very common issue in Dubai due to our climate. The constant use of AC can create significant condensation, and the high humidity provides the perfect environment for mold spores to proliferate.
For a small, surface-level area confined to grout lines, a DIY approach can be attempted. I recommend using a dedicated EPA-approved fungicidal cleaner rather than bleach. Bleach only removes the surface pigment and is ineffective at killing the root structure of the mold on porous surfaces like grout. Scrub thoroughly and ensure the area is completely dried afterward. Improving ventilation during and after showers is critical. However, if the mold reappears quickly, if the affected area is larger than one square foot, or if you notice a persistent musty odor, this indicates a more entrenched problem. Surface cleaning will not address the underlying moisture issue or hidden growth behind tiles. In such cases, a professional inspection is strongly advised. UAE regulations, particularly in rental properties, often require certified remediation to ensure the health and safety of occupants and to properly identify the moisture source. For a definitive assessment and to prevent recurrence, I recommend contacting our certified specialists at Saniservice. We can conduct a comprehensive moisture and mold inspection to determine the full extent of the issue. Call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a consultation. |
