Can I clean shower mold myself or need professional in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Discovery Gardens apartment for two years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the ceiling edge above the shower. It's been really humid lately and the ventilation isn't great. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach, or should I call a professional company for a proper assessment, and if so, what's the typical cost range in Dubai for this?

The black spots you're describing on your bathroom ceiling in Discovery Gardens are a classic case of mold growth, exacerbated by the UAE's high humidity and poor ventilation, which traps moisture from your shower. While small, superficial spots can sometimes be addressed with a DIY approach, I strongly advise caution.

For a surface area less than one square foot, you can attempt cleaning with a dedicated commercial mold remover or a solution of white vinegar and water (bleach is not recommended as it only bleaches the surface and does not kill the roots). However, the location on the ceiling is a significant concern. This indicates sustained condensation and potential moisture penetration from the AC ducting in the slab above or a leak from the adjacent apartment, which is common in these buildings. Scrubbing surface mold will not address this underlying moisture source, guaranteeing its return.

Given Dubai's climate, which forces year-round AC use and creates constant condensation cycles, a professional inspection is highly recommended. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to identify the precise source of the moisture—whether it's simply condensation, a plumbing leak, or AC drip pan overflow—which is critical for a permanent solution. We then provide a detailed remediation protocol.

The cost for a professional assessment in Dubai typically ranges from AED 500 to AED 1000. If remediation is needed, costs depend on the extent of the contamination but often start around AED 1,500 for a bathroom treatment. For a proper assessment to prevent recurrence and ensure the job is done to Dubai Municipality standards, I recommend calling our experts at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or emailing hello@saniservice.com for a consultation.
