Can I clean small black mold with vinegar myself?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a small patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our suitcases. It started appearing after that really humid week we had a couple of months ago, and my wife has been sneezing more than usual ever since. I’m worried it’s making us sick, but it’s only about the size of my hand. Is this something I can safely clean with vinegar myself, or do I absolutely need to call a professional company to deal with it?

That small patch is a common issue here, especially after a humid spell. For an area the size of your hand, a DIY approach with vinegar can be effective for a surface clean.
Use distilled white vinegar undiluted in a spray bottle. Soak the moldy area thoroughly and let it sit for at least an hour to penetrate. Then scrub the area with a stiff brush and wipe it clean with damp cloths you can dispose of. It’s crucial to wear an N95 mask and gloves during this process to avoid inhaling spores or causing skin irritation. However, vinegar only kills surface mold and may not address the root cause or hidden growth. The concern is that the visible patch is often just the tip of the iceberg; mold roots can penetrate porous materials like drywall or the backing of the closet. The recent humidity and your wife’s increased sneezing are strong indicators of a larger issue. Persistent allergy-like symptoms are a common reaction to the spores being released into the bedroom's air. In Dubai’s climate, the real problem is usually hidden condensation or a minor leak creating the damp environment mold needs to thrive. Simply cleaning the surface without identifying and resolving the moisture source means it will almost certainly return. For a situation with health symptoms already present, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the hidden moisture source and assess the full extent of the growth behind the wall. This is the only way to ensure the problem is fully resolved and doesn't recur, protecting your family's health long-term. |
