Can I clean these black mold spots myself with bleach?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we keep our winter clothes. I think it might be from the AC unit on the other side of the wall, and it’s been worse since the humidity spiked last week. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I need to call a professional company to check for a bigger problem?

In Dubai's climate, the high humidity combined with cold surfaces from AC units creates a prime environment for mold growth. For a small, isolated patch under 1 square foot, a DIY cleaning can be attempted. However, bleach is not recommended. It's mostly water, which feeds the mold roots deep in porous materials, and its fumes are hazardous in enclosed spaces. A more effective DIY solution is a mixture of distilled white vinegar and water or a dedicated mold-cleaning product.

Given the location—a closet with winter clothes, which are porous—and the fact it's near an AC unit, this suggests a persistent moisture issue. The humidity spike last week was likely the final trigger. DIY cleaning will only address the visible spots, not the hidden moisture source, which could be a leaking AC drain line or condensation within the wall. The mold will almost certainly return.

For this scenario, a professional inspection is strongly advised to locate and rectify the moisture source. They can also assess if the mold has spread into the wall cavity, which is common. Remediation involves containing the area, removing contaminated porous materials like damaged drywall or insulation, and using HEPA filtration to clean the air. Verifying the cleanup with post-remediation testing from an independent lab is the only way to confirm the space is truly mold-free.
