Can I clean these black wall mold spots myself?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots along the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe. I pulled it away from the wall to plug in a charger and was shocked. The room has felt a bit damp lately, but I just blamed it on the humidity. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach from Carrefour, or is it a sign of a bigger issue that needs a professional?

It depends on the extent. For a small, isolated patch (less than one square meter), you can attempt to clean it yourself. However, in Dubai's climate, mould behind furniture is rarely an isolated incident; it's usually a symptom of excess moisture and poor air circulation, often worsened by year-round AC use creating temperature differentials and condensation.

For a DIY attempt, skip the bleach. It only removes the surface colour and can actually feed the mould roots inside the porous wall material. Use a dedicated mould cleaner or a solution of distilled white vinegar and water. Scrub the area, but more importantly, identify and address the moisture source. This is likely condensation from the cold wall meeting warm, humid air, exacerbated by the wardrobe blocking airflow.

Professionally, this warrants an inspection. A certified mould assessor can determine if the growth has penetrated the drywall or insulation, which is common here. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the true extent of the problem, often behind the walls. Remediation isn't just cleaning; it's fixing the humidity issue to prevent immediate recurrence, which a simple wipe-down will not accomplish. Given the room has felt damp, a professional assessment is the most reliable way to ensure your indoor air quality is safe.
