Can I clean this AC mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our apartment in Jumeirah seems to be leaking a little bit of water onto the carpet below it. I wiped it up, but now a few days later I’m seeing a small black speckled patch forming on the baseboard and the carpet edge feels damp. Is this something I can clean myself with vinegar or a special spray, or do I need to call a professional company to stop it from spreading?

The dampness and black speckling are classic signs of an active mold colony, and the persistent AC leak is the root cause. Dubai's high humidity provides the perfect environment for mold to thrive, especially when combined with condensation from a faulty unit.
For a very small patch (under one square foot), a thorough DIY cleaning can be effective if the moisture source is fixed. Use a solution of distilled white vinegar or a commercial mold remover, scrubbing the hard surface of the baseboard. The carpet edge is more problematic; the damp backing and padding are difficult to dry completely and likely harbor hidden growth. However, if the leak persists or the dampness has spread into the wall or under the carpet, DIY efforts will fail. The leak must be repaired by an AC technician first to stop the moisture. For anything beyond a surface-level spot, a professional assessment is recommended. They use moisture meters to find the full extent of the water damage and can determine if the wall cavity or sub-floor requires remediation to prevent structural damage and recurring health issues. In many cases, simply wiping the visible spot misses the main colony. |
