Can I clean this black mold myself with vinegar?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, where we store our winter clothes. It wasn't there before, but the humidity the last few weeks has been brutal. Is this something I can tackle myself with a vinegar spray from the supermarket, or do I need to call a professional cleaning company?

It depends on the size of the patch and the surface it's on. For a small area (under one square foot) on a non-porous surface like painted drywall or tile, a DIY approach can be effective. A solution of distilled white vinegar is a good starting point, as it can kill many common mold types. Scrub the area thoroughly, let the vinegar sit for an hour, then wipe it clean and ensure the area is completely dry.

However, the Dubai climate is a major factor. The recent high humidity means the moisture source is likely ongoing, either from condensation from your AC unit, a small leak, or simply ambient dampness being trapped in the enclosed closet. If you don't identify and control that moisture source, the mold will return quickly, regardless of how well you clean.

For porous materials like drywall, wood, or especially your stored clothing, vinegar may not penetrate deeply enough to kill the roots. Bleach is not recommended as it only lightens the color and does not address the underlying growth. If the patch is larger than a square foot, has a musty odor, or you see signs of water staining, a professional inspection is advised to assess the extent and identify the exact moisture cause. They can also perform lab testing to confirm the mold type, which is important for determining the appropriate remediation method. In many villas and apartments here, the root cause is often hidden condensation within the wall or a minor AC drip line issue that requires expert diagnosis.
