Can I clean this black mold or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and it feels a bit damp. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do you think it’s a bigger issue that needs a professional to check for a leak?

That damp patch with black mold on an exterior wall is a red flag for a hidden moisture source, which is the real issue you need to address. In Dubai's climate, exterior walls are prone to condensation from the extreme temperature differential between the air-conditioned interior and the hot, humid outside air. It's also possible there's a small leak from a pipe within the wall or a flaw in the building's external waterproofing.
For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can clean it yourself. However, do not use bleach. It is mostly water, which feeds the mold roots deep in the porous wall, and its fumes are hazardous in an enclosed space. Instead, use a dedicated fungicidal cleaner or a simple solution of distilled white vinegar. Scrub the area, let it dry completely, and then monitor it closely. If the mold returns within a few weeks—which is highly likely if the dampness persists—you have a chronic moisture problem. This is when a professional assessment is necessary. They will use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to locate the exact source of the water intrusion behind the wall without causing unnecessary damage. Simply cleaning the visible mold repeatedly will not solve the underlying issue, and the colony will continue to grow unseen, potentially affecting your indoor air quality and the building's structure. For a persistent problem on an exterior wall, the most effective solution is to identify and rectify the moisture source. |
