Can I clean this damp wall mold myself or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a cluster of black, speckled spots spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and it feels slightly damp. The AC unit is right outside that wall, so I'm worried there might be a leak. Is this something I can clean with bleach myself, or do I absolutely need to call a professional to check for water damage?

That dampness and mold location strongly suggest a hidden water leak from the AC unit or its condensate drain line, which is extremely common here. The wall's dampness means the moisture source is active; cleaning the visible mold now is a temporary fix at best.
For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself with a vinegar solution or a dedicated mold remover, not bleach. Bleach only removes surface discoloration and does not address the root cause or the hyphae (roots) within porous materials like drywall. Always wear an N95 mask and gloves during cleaning. However, given the described dampness and the AC's proximity, a professional inspection is highly recommended. They will use moisture meters to locate the exact source of the intrusion behind the wall, which is critical. In Dubai's climate, unchecked moisture leads to rapid structural damage and more extensive mold growth that can affect air quality. The remediation process itself is often straightforward once the leak is fixed: the affected section of drywall is removed, the cavity is treated and dried, and new wallboard is installed. The key is ensuring the leak is permanently resolved to prevent immediate recurrence. Many reputable firms offer free initial inspections to assess the scope. |
