Can I clean this mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of small black spots growing in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and it's gotten worse since that last humid spell. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or vinegar, or do I need to call in a professional company to deal with it?

Based on the description of your situation—a recurring mold issue on an exterior wall, worsened by recent humidity, and affecting a storage area—this is a case where professional assessment is strongly recommended. The small black spots are likely just the visible surface growth; the underlying moisture problem within the wall structure is the primary concern.

Attempting a DIY clean with bleach or vinegar is a temporary and often ineffective solution in Dubai's climate. Bleach does not kill mold roots on porous surfaces like drywall and can actually aggravate the problem by adding moisture. Vinegar can kill some surface mold but will not address the hidden infestation or the root cause. The high humidity and constant use of air conditioning create significant temperature differentials, leading to condensation within walls, especially on external-facing surfaces like your closet. This creates a perpetual moisture source that DIY methods cannot resolve.

In the UAE, proper mold remediation requires identifying and eliminating the moisture source, containing the affected area to prevent spore dispersal, physically removing contaminated porous materials (like sections of drywall or insulation), and treating the area with professional-grade antimicrobials. A certified inspector will use tools like moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to assess the full extent of the damage, which is almost always greater than what is visible.

For a proper diagnosis and remediation plan that complies with local standards, I advise contacting a professional company. Saniservice offers comprehensive mold inspection and remediation services tailored to the specific challenges of the Dubai climate.
