Can I clean this mold myself or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be leaking a bit of water onto the wall behind the guest bedroom wardrobe. I finally moved it today and found a patch of black, fuzzy mold about the size of a dinner plate spreading from the skirting board. It’s been really humid lately and I’m worried it’s been growing for a while. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or do I absolutely need to call a professional company to handle it?

Based on the description you've provided, this is a situation that requires immediate professional attention and is not suitable for a DIY bleach cleaning. The presence of a dinner-plate-sized patch of black, fuzzy mold indicates a significant moisture issue originating from your AC unit's condensation leak. In Dubai's climate, where high humidity and year-round AC use create ideal conditions for mold, such a leak provides a constant source of moisture, allowing mold to proliferate deeply into building materials.

Bleach is a surface-level disinfectant and is ineffective on porous materials like drywall and skirting boards. It will only remove the surface discoloration while leaving the root structure (mycelium) intact, leading to rapid regrowth. More critically, disturbing the mold by cleaning can aerosolize toxic spores, potentially contaminating your entire apartment's air supply and posing serious health risks.

Under UAE regulations, proper mold remediation involves a certified inspection to identify the species and extent of contamination, followed by source correction (fixing the AC leak), containment of the affected area to prevent cross-contamination, professional-grade antimicrobial treatment, and safe disposal of compromised porous materials. Our company, Saniservice, utilizes industry-standard protocols including HEPA filtration and post-remediation verification to ensure the environment is safe.

For a confirmed leak and growth of this scale, a professional assessment is non-negotiable. I strongly recommend you call our experts at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a comprehensive inspection and remediation plan. Do not attempt to handle this yourself.
