Can I clean this shower mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle for about a year now, but I’ve only just noticed a small patch of black mold forming in the corner where the shower stall meets the ceiling. The humidity has been brutal lately, even with the AC running constantly. I’m worried it might be spreading inside the wall. Is this something I need to get a professional to handle immediately, or is it something I can clean myself this weekend?

Small patches of surface mold on non-porous areas like painted ceilings or tiles can often be cleaned yourself. For a small area, a solution of distilled white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) can be effective. Wear a mask and gloves, ensure the room is well-ventilated, and scrub the area thoroughly. The key is to address the moisture source; run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and wipe down wet surfaces.

However, if the mold is in the corner where two walls meet the ceiling, there is a significant risk it has spread into the wall cavity behind, especially given Dubai's high humidity and the constant AC use that creates a temperature differential and promotes condensation. If the drywall or plaster feels soft, discolored, or the mold returns quickly after cleaning, the issue is internal.

For suspected internal growth or recurring mold, a professional inspection is advised. They use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the wall's interior without unnecessary damage. In the UAE, remediation standards require containment of the affected area to prevent cross-contamination. If the mold covers more than approximately one square meter, professional remediation is typically recommended to ensure it is handled according to local health and safety guidelines.
