Can I clean this wall mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be leaking a bit of water onto the wall behind the guest room wardrobe, and now I’m seeing a patch of black and green mold there about the size of my hand. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it when we were rearranging furniture. Is this something I can safely clean myself with vinegar or bleach, or do I need to call a professional company to deal with it?

Based on your description, that situation requires immediate attention and is not a candidate for a DIY solution. The fact that the mold growth is due to an AC leak, is located behind furniture (indicating a sustained moisture issue), and has visible coloration (black/green) pushes this firmly into professional territory.

In the UAE's humid climate, what you see on the surface is often just the tip of the iceberg. The moisture from the leak has likely penetrated the gypsum board and possibly the wall structure behind it. Simply wiping the surface with vinegar or bleach will only temporarily remove the visible growth but will not address the root moisture problem or the hidden microbial contamination within the wall cavity. Bleach, in particular, is ineffective on porous surfaces and can exacerbate the issue by adding moisture.

Dubai Civil Defence regulations and best practices for indoor environmental quality strongly advise against unqualified remediation, as improper handling can aerosolize spores and spread contamination throughout your apartment, creating a much larger health risk and a more expensive problem to fix.

You need a certified professional inspection first. We would use moisture meters and thermal imaging to assess the full extent of the water damage and mold growth hidden within the wall. Based on that, a proper containment and remediation plan is developed to safely remove the affected materials, eliminate the moisture source (fixing the AC drain line is crucial), and restore the area.

For a proper assessment and to prevent this from becoming a major health and property issue, you should call a pro. You can reach our certified team at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for an inspection.
